We need to choose the books for the October and November meetings (there is no meeting in December). The suggestion is for everyone to think of one or two books, bring your ideas to the September meeting and we’ll make the choice then.
Feel free to make suggestions in comments to this post. One idea that came up at the meeting is Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny. This is widely considered one of the classic SF novels, and indeed it’s been reprinted as part of the SF Masterworks series. Having said that, we did say it would be nice to have some hard SF after a number of fantasy novels, and Lord of Light isn’t hard SF. Maybe we could combine Lord of Light with a more conventional hard SF novel.
The next meeting is on Saturday 24th August. We’re meeting on the ground floor again.
This month’s book is The Tales of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach by Steven Erikson. I’d guess most of us have seen, and been put off by, the massive tomes that Erikson turns out for his Malazan Book of the Fallen series but The Tales of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach is much shorter and more light hearted. I hope everyone will enjoy it, but you will need a taste for dark humour!
It’s time to start thinking about books for the October and November meetings. We need to finalise the choice at the September meeting so Rodney can do the poster. We don’t need to make any decisions at this meeting, but feel free to float any ideas for a final decision in September.
